Session 24 — Two Chapters

Area: Castle Ravenloft — The Gallery, the Library

Context

The party is already inside Castle Ravenloft, carrying forward from session 23: Vess unconscious after the kitchen incident, Logi's contract signed, Mark and Yager recognizing each other, Azhurielle down after her encounter with Strahd in the dining room and now with Khione.

Myra returns to the castle this session, Kyra beside her.

The Gallery

The party moves through the castle and reaches a long gallery, portraits floor to ceiling, centuries deep. At the far end, lit and kept clean unlike anything else in the room, hangs a wedding portrait three times the size of any other painting. The groom is young, human, and unmistakably Strahd. The bride is Taara.

Beneath the painting stands a lectern, and on it a single book: Kept Memories.

Strahd is already there. He does not hide and he does not leave. He works to keep anyone from reading past the book's second chapter.

He wants Khione to be the one to read it, and grants her ten feet of sight for the purpose — a gift, from him, to someone born blind. The gift is permanent: Khione can now see, out to ten feet. But it does not serve Strahd's purpose. He did not know that Khione cannot read.

The First Two Chapters

Logi reads instead. He reads the first two chapters aloud. No further.

The Tower Bedroom

Taara is not in the gallery. The reading reaches her in the tower bedroom: while Logi reads, her memory of her marriage to Strahd comes back within minutes — the happy years, the wedding, the life she shared with him. What does not come back is why she left, why she forgot, or what happened after. She is confused, not devastated — she only has the good half.

Strahd tells her not to worry about it and offers no explanation.

After the reading stops, Strahd returns to the tower bedroom with the book in his hand and puts it on the bookshelf there. Taara sees him do it. She does not know what the book is.

Then they talk. Taara is happy with the people she has met. Strahd tells her they are not as they seem — "I'll show you" — and teleports himself and Taara to the basement under the kitchen.

The Basement Under the Kitchen

In the basement under the kitchen, Strahd shows Taara his version of recent events: Mark as Vess's killer, Logi as the one who did nothing to stop it, and Strahd himself as the one who got Vess to safety.

The Library

Logi and Taara meet in the library. This is where Strahd calls in the contract from session 23. (Clarified session 25: the contract was for one service only, so this is the whole of it — Strahd spends his single claim here and has no further hold on Logi.)

He makes Logi tell Taara that he and Mark killed Vess together — a lie; Vess was the stag Mark beheaded in the kitchen, and Logi and Khione were the ones who stabilized her afterward. The forced confession lines up with the version Strahd showed Taara in the basement under the kitchen. Strahd does not stop there. He also frames Logi for the deaths of children earlier in the campaign, folding a real grievance Myra already holds against Logi — the Hag encounter — into the case he is building. He plays all of it onto Taara, working to convince her that the party, and Logi specifically, cannot be trusted.

Logi confesses. He cannot do otherwise.

Taara, with Strahd, sends him away. He is banished back to Ashenwood — the same village that banished him once already, as a child, after his grandmother's death.

A wish has left Logi at level 20. Without the wildfire he traded away in session 22, but with power he did not have before, he means to go home and face the fire elemental threatening Ashenwood himself.

Elsewhere in the Castle

Mark, still around the kitchen, searches it and finds a knife — the Cleaver of the Last Cut (see items/cleaver of the last cut.mark.md). It bonds to his hand the moment he grasps it: he cannot drop it, sheath it, or give it away, and it returns to him by the next dawn if lost. It hungers for blood daily. For a butcher who thought he'd found the finest knife he'd ever owned, the truth will take weeks to surface.

Vess remains unconscious throughout the session.

Azhurielle is present this arc as a one-time guest rather than a regular member of the party. Whether she returns is open.

Taara Confronts the Party

Taara goes to the party to confront them with what she believes. Myra tries to show her the party's real history together — countering what Strahd has been building in her. Strahd tells Taara not to trust it.

Taara loses her memory of the party being trustworthy.

Even so, Myra gets through: she shows Taara the entire campaign since the day Taara joined them, including the existence of the book itself, and a warning that it should not be read past a certain point.

The session ends there. Whether Taara believes any of it — Myra's account, Strahd's, either, both — is unresolved.
